Recent scientific breakthroughs have discovered the effects of heritability on treatment and, more importantly, treatment outcomes, especially when using psychotropic medications. A client’s genetic make-up may actually affect treatment due to a person’s inability to tolerate or metabolize medications. Acadiana Medical Psychological Services (AMPS) offers genetic testing to ascertain how a patient’s genetics may contribute to or impede success when using medications. Although this science has not advanced to the point of indicating the exact treatment, the information allows us to make informed decisions about medications, so that faster improvement with fewer side-effects is more likely.
